Hope or its lack thereof drives our actions. Without it we have no reason to do anything, even the things that are seemingly good for us. And not only we need to find hope when there’s crisis, it’s not easy to maintain hope.
Community is a big one, for instance. If you’re living in a community in which virtue is not valued, it’s going to cost you a lot of willpower to not give that up.
Because you need to feed yourself emotionally too. And when you get no food in that regard, it leads you to the belief that you have no control over your fate, ’cause you run out of energy, and therefore not able to continue, and even if you do, it doesn’t matter.
