Miscommunication might be a bigger problem than being uninformed in our times. People don’t even know what they’re arguing about sometimes, and arguments elevate quickly. What’s next is unnecessary back-and-forth, the energy is wasted.

Our definitions are either too vague or too one-sided. And if that makes things a bit hard (which it certainly does), not getting your point across magnifies it.

That is one of the reasons there’s a moderator in public debates. That way, not only the audience is engaged and guided, it makes it easier for debaters to not get off track. In that type of setting, there’s usually time and the goal is to think things through, understanding things better. But in our daily lives, that’s not always our goal. We’re in a rush and want to make things easier for us in an instant.
